Happy National Fish and Chip Day!
It’s finally here – that one day of the year where we come together as a country to celebrate our favourite national dish of succulent battered fish and steaming golden chips.
While any day is a good day for fish and chips in our book, it’s great to see so many people taking part in National Fish and Chip Day 2019.
Up and down the UK, from chippies in London to busy shopping centres in Birmingham, many people are celebrating National Fish and Chip day in their own unique ways. In this post, we’ll take a look at some of the ways in which fish and chip lovers are showing their appreciation across the country.
But before we do that, let’s learn a little bit more about National Fish and Chip day itself.
What is National Fish and Chip Day?
Held on the first Friday of June each year, National Fish and Chip Day is organised by the National Edible Oil Distributors Association (NEODA). The day unites all the key players in the fish and chip industry, including restaurants, pubs, fish and chip shops and retailers, as well as farmers and fishermen at the other end of the supply chain.
And now to the celebrations themselves…
Vin(egar) and Tonic
We’re all familiar with a prawn cocktail but have you ever heard of a fish and chips cocktail? In probably the quirkiest crossover we’ve seen so far this National Fish and Chip Day, Sarson’s Vinegar has teamed up with Poppie’s Fish & Chips to deliver a fish and chip flavoured cocktail.
Consisting of gin, dry vermouth, lemon juice, sugar, dill and (of course) Sarson’s vinegar, these “vin and tonics” are being given out for free in Poppie’s Soho and Spitalfields branches. You’ll have to hurry though, as they’re only giving away a total of 100 cocktails.
Bargains at the Bullring
Bullring & Grand Central is one of Birmingham’s most recognisable landmarks, as well as one of the UK’s biggest and busiest shopping centres. To celebrate National Fish and Chip day, the Bullring has teamed up with the chippie franchise Tasty Plaice to offer 25% off fish and chips throughout the day. All you have to do to claim your discounted fish dishes is download the Bullring’s PLUS app, which can be downloaded for free from Google Play or the App Store.
It’s not just fish and chips that are getting the discount treatment – June 7th also happens to be National Doughnut Day too! To mark the occasion, the Bullring is extending its generosity by offering the first 100 PLUS users a free original glazed doughnut from Krispy Kreme. A fish supper followed by a sugary treat, what’s not to like?
